PARIS — London still outshines Paris and Frankfurt as the European city best suited for business but Warsaw is poised to attract a large share of companies in the coming years, a survey said Tuesday.
The British capital has even managed to extend its lead over Paris despite the financial crisis while Frankfurt is struggling to hold its ground against Barcelona, said the survey by consulting firm Cushman & Wakefield.
Barcelona's attractiveness as a business city has been steadily growing over the past 20 years among leaders of Europe's top companies who are interviewed for the annual "European Cities monitor."
Warsaw has been named as the up-and-coming city for business, with executives saying they plan to expand there next, replacing Moscow, which ranks second on that list.
Executives still see London as an expensive city to do business in, but the recent drop in the price of office real estate has created new opportunities to set up shop in the capital, said the survey.
Birmingham jumped up seven spaces on the ranking, from 21 to 14.
Athens ranked as Europe's worst business city, just below Oslo, according to the survey.
The survey is based on interview with senior managers and board directors for 500 of Europe's largest companies.
